Scouting the Texas Tech Red Raiders
Huskies' next opponent: Texas Tech Raiders
Tip: Saturday, 1 p.m., Hec Edmundson Pavilion (FSN).
Record: Texas Tech, from the Big 12 Conference, is 5-3 overall. The Red Raiders are picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 this season.
Series: Washington leads the series, 5-3, but Texas Tech won last season in Lubbock, Texas, 99-92 in overtime, despite 31 points from the Huskies' Quincy Pondexter. UW coach Lorenzo Romar is 0-2 against Texas Tech.
Projected Red Raiders starting lineup:
G John Roberson, 5-11 168 Sr. 13.5 ppg
G David Tairu, 6-3 177, Sr. 11.5 ppg
C Robert Lewandowski, 6-10 256 Jr. 12.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg
F Brad Reese, 6-6 195 Sr. 11.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg
F Mike Singletary, 6-5 235 Sr. 12.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg
About the Red Raiders: Texas Tech, which went 19-16 and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT last season under coach Pat Knight, starts an experienced lineup that includes four seniors and one junior. All five starters average double-figures in scoring. Knight, son of coaching legend Bob Knight, enters his third season with a record of 42-45 as the head coach of the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech is a team that struggles on the boards. The Red Raiders are ranked 267th overall in rebounds per game, and in an early season loss to Saint Mary's, they were out-rebounded 30-19.
In last year's matchup with the Huskies, Roberson proved to be the difference finishing with 25 points and seven assists. The Huskies will most likely defend the 5-11 Roberson with a combination of Venoy Overton and Abdul Gaddy.
The bottom line: The Huskies (4-2) will look to use their depth and ability to score as advantages against Texas Tech. Washington also has the benefit of being at home in this year's matchup, and should be able to reverse last season's loss to the Red Raiders.
The pick: Washington, 93-80.
Next up: vs. Portland, Monday, 7 p.m., Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
