Christian Ponder returns to practice

Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder returned to practice Saturday afternoon, and, according to head coach Jimbo Fisher, the results were surprisingly good.

Ponder injured the bursa sac in his throwing elbow during last week's win over Boston College. He had not thrown since that game, but Fisher said that the fifth-year signal-caller went through a number of drills during Saturday's practice session, which was treated like a typical Monday practice.

The bursa sac is the latest in a number of nagging injuries that Ponder has dealt with this season. Fisher, however, was extremely pleased with what he saw out of Ponder's return.

"I was shocked as well as he did throw it," Fisher said. "I was thinking the first day back might be (tough) He went out there and threw the ball well today."

In fact, Fisher noted that, had he not known beforehand, it might have been tough to tell that Ponder was even injured at all.

"Maybe just a hair. Just a twinge, but not a great deal," Fisher said. "I mean, just a little. You can tell a little bit, because I knew specifically (that Ponder was injured). But he was throwing posts, goes."

Ponder, who has thrown for 1,187 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, was limited to situational drills on Saturday, but Fisher said that Sunday "should be" a normal practice, with the quarterback participating as he normally would. And judging by Saturday's apparent results, Ponder ought to be up to the task.

"It's good," Fisher said. "We expected to go some today and then tomorrow would be really hard, but he went out there today, and, shoot, he threw all kind of balls. Threw downfield, threw deep. Did everything."
