ULM notches conference win over UALR
Both the Warhawks and the Trojans entered the Saturday game looking for their first Sun Belt Conference victory, as both sat at 0-3 in league play. Arkansas-Little Rock had lost all three of their prior attempts by an average of five points per contest. This trend continued, as the hot shooting of senior guard Tony Hooper propelled ULM (6-9, 1-3) past UALR (4-11, 0-4) with a 68-64 win.
In the opening minutes, it was all Trojans, as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Junior Lawrence Gilbert would answer with six straight points to tie the game at six. ULM looked to then take control of the game, as they broke the game open with a 15-3 run, holding onto a nine point advantage with just under ten minutes remaining in the first half. UALR junior Matt Mouzy would catch fire though, as he poured in 13 of his team high 19 in the first half to lead his team to a 35-32 intermission lead.
Hooper would then set a new season best with 28 points, 22 coming in the second half to close the margin, and put the Warhawks up by as many as seven before the game's final. The Houston, Texas native also left another mark in the ULM history books, as he tied the second best performance in school history with his career best eight made three-pointers.
ULM will now have a small break from the hardwood, as classes are set to start again for the spring on Monday. Thursday, the Warhawks will square off against FIU in the first of two straight road games in the Sunshine State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm and can be heard on-line at ULMWarhawks.com.
