Warhawks tame Tigers, 76-66

After a two game road trip, the Warhawks returned to the friendly confines of Fant-Ewing Coliseum for an intra-state contest against the Grambling State Tigers. ULM holds a 6-3 lead in the series; with the teams last squaring off in 1999 in a 79-76 ULM victory. This year's match-up gave the Warhawks a little more wiggle room though as they went over the .500 mark with a 76-66 win.

"It's a good win, we knew they were going to come in, play hard and be scrappy," Head Coach Orlando Early said. "This is what we are looking for though, we need an emotionally charged game."

Grambling hung close to the home team, pulling to within two points nearing the midway point of the first half. The Warhawks were able to break open the contest with a 13-4 run in the latter part of the half to take a 39-26 lead into the intermission.

The Tigers continued to hang close in the second half, pulling to within nine points with one minute remaining. Having seasoned big man in the middle, Rudy Turner foul out didn't help, as he was able to dominate the boards and contribute to ULM's 24 points in the paint while setting new season bests in rebounding and scoring with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Tony Hooper continued his assault on the ULM history books as he moved up the career lists to fifth in steals and ninth in assists. Hooper's seven assists would also set a new season high for him.

"I really don't think about the records, I just go out every night and try to do what coach (Early) tells us and plays the plan that he lays out for us," Hooper said of his latest accomplishments.

Leading the Warhawks in scoring was senior Lawrence Gilbert with 18 points a new season high, while setting a new career high in assists with four. Matching his season high performance against Morehead State was senior guard Dynile Forbes who put up 17 points.

Grambling was led in scoring by Lance Fuertado with 23 points.

The Warhawks continue their string of Louisiana opponents as they travel to Shreveport to face off against the Gents of Centenary. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
