Coordinators say team will be ready for Notre Dame

EAST LANSING - Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi did not fault the effort or the emotion of his defense for failing to make enough plays to put down a hungry Central Michigan team that beat Michigan State 29-27 on a 42-yard field goal following a successful on-side kick recovery with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter.

But the Spartan coordinator was not pleased with the way his crew executed on defense. Missed tackles, penalties, and poor play on the deep ball could all be lumped into to the sloppy play that plagued the Spartan defense and allowed CMU to stick around long enough for a come-from-behind victory at Spartan Stadium.

"We just didn't play well enough," Narduzzi said. "I didn't coach well enough and the kids didn't play well enough. We will coach their tails off this week and we will be ready next week for Notre Dame."

Penalties reared their ugly throughout the game, but none was more noticeable than the controversial off-sides penalty assessed to defensive end Colin Neely who made contact with a Central Michigan player during a 48-yard field goal attempt by CMU's Andrew Aguila. While it appeared that Neely touched the CMU player after an initial false start by the Chippewa tight end, the penalty cost Michigan State dearly as Aguila kicked a 42-yard game-winner with 8 seconds on the clock.

"There was lack of discipline out there and we have to straighten it out," said Narduzzi. "It is our job as coaches."
Penalties were not exclusive to the defense. But the biggest misstep made by the Spartan offense was not capitalizing with touchdowns on a handful of scoring opportunities.
"We certainly had some opportunities,"

Treadwell said, "We certainly had some opportunities and took a few shots in the end zone. We make those plays and it is a different situation. We are going to continue to move forward but obviously this is very disappointing for us as a team."
