Mullen enters first game week

This week is yet another first for Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen.

It's his first game week heading into Saturday's season opener with Jackson State which will be his first on the sidelines embarking on his head coaching career.

"I'm really excited and this is obviously something I have wanted my whole life," Mullen said. "Growing up and having this opportunity is unbelievable. Now this week is here and it's another first for me. You have your first team meetings, first offseason workouts, first spring practice, first fall camp and now first game week then it will be the first game. I'm really excited."

Saturday's matchup with the Tigers will be the first ever meeting between MSU and JSU but it will also be the first time a Southeastern Conference school has squared off against the Southwestern Athletic Conference on the gridiron.

"We're excited this week to obviously have a big time game and an instate rivalry which hopefully we can develop that can get played on more of a regular basis," Mullen said. "It's an historic game as well with a SWAC Conference school playing a Southeastern Conference school for the first time. We're real excited and I know the guys on our team are excited. These kids grew up playing against each other in all levels of football and that's what makes instate rivalries really exciting."

Jackson State finished 7-5 last season before losing 41-9 in the SWAC Conference Championship to Grambling snapping a six-game winning streak.
