Position Preview: Wide Receivers
Mississippi State looks to be in deep trouble with depth at wide receiver during spring practice.
The Bulldogs went as far as dressing out walk-on quarterbacks at wideout just to have enough to scrimmage. But the enrollment of five freshman receivers this fall has not only added depth but also plenty of young talent at the position as well.
"We've got a lot of depth right now and some quality depth," said MSU wide receivers coach Mark Hudspeth. "We're still in a little pecking order right now as far as who we are going to play as freshmen and who we are going to redshirt. Hopefully these next three weeks of practice will tell us something before the first game."
Four-star freshmen Chad Bumphis, Chris Smith and Dennis Thames along with three-star signees Brandon Heavens and Ricco Sanders help to provide MSU the possibility of instant impact from the 2009 class.
"Chad Bumphis has got a lot of speed, quickness and explosiveness," Hudspeth said. "He really was learning the offense well until his little setback with the foot injury. He should be back here pretty soon. Brandon Heavens is very shifty and has a lot of lateral movement. Ricco Sanders has got a lot of speed and a lot of lateral movement too and he brings a lot to the table. Dennis Thames has got some great speed and is a tough kid that is doing a great job blocking. Chris Smith is a big kid that is catching the ball well. He's got big hands and catches the ball well across the middle.
