Derby picks up another offer

The scholarship offers keep rolling in for A.J. Derby. The top ranked player in the state of Iowa for 2010 has picked up another big scholarship offer recently.

"Miami offered me recently. They have a real good football history and they seem to be building a good program," he said.

The four star quarterback prospect now has over a dozen scholarship offers. Included in that list are: Iowa, Florida, Wisconsin, Stanford, Kansas State, Florida State, Nebraska, South Florida, Alabama, Illinois, Kansas, and Cincinnati.

College coaches will be making visits to his high school shortly and after that recruiting period concludes, he plans to narrow his list to ten schools. By the end of the summer he hopes to cut that list to five and then start to schedule official visits in the fall and after his senior season concludes.

Derby says that all of the schools are sending him about equal amounts of mail, but the notes from Iowa are always more personal, which he appreciates.

"Iowa sends me the most personal letters," he said. "I think they have started recruiting me a little hard now, but everything with them has always been very personal in their contacts with me, which is very nice."

Derby recently made the short trip over to an Iowa practice, which he has done many times before.

"I was there on a Sunday a couple of weeks ago. I have been there quite a bit, but it is always nice to go to practice there and the coaches are always very nice."

Next up for the 6-foot-5 and 218 pound four star prospect is a trip out west to the Elite 11 tryout camp on May 15th in California. It will also be a business trip of sorts as he visits three schools on the west coast.

"We are going to visit USC, UCLA, and probably Stanford while we are out there. I am looking forward to visiting the schools and it should be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to meeting the USC coaches and see what they are like."
