Christian eyes Ohio State
The 2009 National Signing day may have just passed but that doesn't mean 2010 recruits haven't been drawing their fair share of attention.
Interest in Pittsburgh (Pa.) Penn Hills cornerback Cullen Christian has picked up quite a bit as of late, as the 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior already has offers from Maryland, Michigan, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Central Michigan, and most recently, Purdue.
"Lately (my recruiting process) really has bee good. I have been getting a couple offers," Christian said. "I have been getting a lot of interest from schools too like UCLA, Oregon, Florida, Alabama, Rutgers, Illinois, and Ohio State. I have been hearing from a lot of schools, really. I don't even think a lot of people have had the chance to get my film either."
While things are still warming up for Christian in terms of offers and becoming familiar with all the different schools, the cornerback did acknowledge that Ohio State caught his eye during the process.
"I have been hearing from them a lot and I have talked to a few of their coaches," Christian said of Ohio State. "Ohio State is a good school and I want to go somewhere that sends corners or sends a lot of people to the next level or the NFL.
"I want somebody to be able to coach me. Nobody is perfect and I want all my skills to get better," Christian added. "Ohio State has good coaches and I really want to go to a school with good coaches."
While Ohio State hasn't sent an official offer his way, judging by his experience at Junior Day has Christian confident one will eventually come from the Buckeyes.
"Went up there for junior day and got a chance to talk to a lot of coaches but I don't think they got a chance to look at my film yet," Christian said. "They know me because I went to the team camp up there and I was one of the best corners up there and I got noticed."
"I think they like me based on what they had seen then," Christian added. "I think when it is all said and done and get a chance to look at my film, I think they will come with an offer."
What has obviously impressed Christian is the situation of cornerback Malcom Jenkins, who could be a top-10 pick in this year's NFL Draft.
"Malcolm Jenkins is one of my favorite players and I definitely look up to him," Christian said. "I looked at a couple of his high school films and saw he definitely got better from high school to college and his skills got way better and that's something to look forward to."
Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell has been in contact with Christian, who also got a chance to meet with the cornerback when visit his current teammate, wide receiver Brandon Ifill.
Christian said he is enjoying being recruited by the same schools that are after Ifill, and while playing together in the next level would be enjoyable, the cornerback said it wouldn't factor into his decision.
"We have a couple schools that are recruiting us," Christian said. "We both have a few of the same offers. We aren't really striving (to play together), but it is something good because meeting new people is good, but it would be good to go to school and know somebody. If it happens, it happens. We aren't going to base our decision off of it though."
Right now it is about accumulating as many offers as possible, but if Ohio State sent an offer Christian's way, it would be certainly something that would excite him.
"I think they would make my top three, but everybody still has a shot," Christian said. "I have a long time. I am going to look at depth charts, who is coaching, and who is leaving. Ohio State, I am definitely interested in them, but it depends how much they like me."
