4-Star LB looking for best fit

SpartanMag.com caught up briefly with linebacker prospect Jeremy Gainer of Livonia Clarenceville High School last night. Rivals.com rates G ainer a 4-star recruit and the #15 outside linebacker prospect in the nation for the class of 2009.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound prospect made an early commitment to the Indiana Hoosiers back in June, but has since decided to look around to make sure to find the best fit. Since his summer commitment, Gainer has picked up some impressive scholarships. Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan State have all extend him an offer.

Michigan State was very high on Gainer last summer and likely would have offered him at the July Camp. Gainer however suffered a hamstring injury during track season, which prevented him from making the camp rounds.

We spoke with Gainer about Michigan State:

"I got an offer from Michigan State. I am going to go up there on Saturday to watch practice and talk to the coaches to see where they are at with me."

The Spartan offer came about two weeks. Many had figured that the Spartans may not have enough scholarship room to offer Gainer, but a combination of his high-level of play this fall and a few additional spots opening up have changed that.

We asked gainer about where the Spartans see him playing and if he plans on taking an official visit to Michigan State?

"They see me as a player that can move around a lot, but mainly as a WILL linebacker. If things go well, I will probably take my (official) visit up there that weekend"

An official visit for Gainer would likely be the weekend of January 9th when the Spartans are hosting other top prospects and commitments like tight end Dion Sims of Orchard Lake Saint Mary's and wide receivers Bennie Fowler of Detroit Country Day and Donald Spencer of Ypsilanti.

Spartanmag.com will be sure to follow-up with Gainer next week to see how things went up at practice. Coach Dantonio and his staff are looking to put the finishing touches on a class that is not only highly rated, but meets the needs of the team. Adding a 4-star player with the versatility of Gainer could be the icing on the cake.
