Oregon lands wide receiver

Every program is looking for the next major red zone threat at wide receiver and the Oregon Ducks think they may have found one in the junior college ranks. A freshman qualifier from the Southern California junior college ranks committed to the Ducks on Monday and can leave in December with four years left to play three seasons in Eugene.

Huntington Beach (Calif.) Golden West College is the place for the Oregon Ducks this past week as two players from the Rustlers have given their word to the Ducks. After the commitment of defensive tackle Andrew Iupati to the Ducks last week, wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei decided to join his teammate in Eugene.

"I verbally committed to Oregon on Monday," Tuinei said. "They offered me a full ride last week but I cannot sign until December."

Tuinei is a freshman at Golden West and was a high school qualifier out of Hamilton High School in Indiana. He was being recruited by Ball State as a junior at Noblesville High School (IN) but was unable to play his senior season after to transferring to Hamilton due to state transfer rules.

Tuinei says he does not know much about the Eugene area, but looks forward to learning more when he visits in December.

"I am going up there on December 5-7," Tuinei said. "I know nothing at all about it. I have been checking them out on web sites and I am looking forward to checking it out when I go up there."

Tuinei is 6-foot-6, 195 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash around 4.5 seconds. He finished the regular season with 41 receptions for 680 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games for the Rustlers in helping Golden West to their best season in nearly two decades.

Tuinei says two other Pac 10 programs have been showing interest.

"ASU has been saying they are interested but nothing has happened yet," Tuinei said. "Oregon State has been calling."

Despite attention from other programs, Tuinei says Oregon is a good situation.

"They are saying they need two wideouts for next season," Tuinei said. "I like coach Bellotti and his staff."

Coaches Pflugrad and Neal have been heading up the recruitment of Tuinei.
