BC Blog: 2009 BC draft prospects

With the '08 draft in the books with both Matt Ryan and Gosder Cherilus landing in round 1, I look ahead to the '09 draft. BC will graduate 17 seniors next year, but I can only see three players with legitimate shots at being chosen in the draft.

Brian Toal will suffer from a deep linebacker class, but I can still see him being picked in the mid rounds. He lacks ideal size, but he makes up for it with speed, quickness and great football instincts. Hopefully the red-shirt year allowed him to add muscle to his frame. This year he will focus entirely on defense, but his versatility should definitely appeal to some teams (New England Patriots anyone?) The knock on him has been his history of injuries, but if he can stay healthy and have a productive senior year he will be a lock in the draft

Prediction: Rounds 3-4

Ryan Purvis is coming off of a year in which he was named 1st team All ACC. Purvis returns for his senior season looking to build off the momentum from last year. Obviously it will be difficult to duplicate his numbers without Matt Ryan, but I think he can come close. Purvis has the size and hands to be an NFL tight end, but he must prove he can block and he will get plenty of chances blocking for Josh Haden this year.

Prediction: Rounds 4-5

B.J. Raji missed all of last year, but in '06 he was 2nd team All-ACC. In '06, he showed he has the ability to dominate the line of scrimmage. He clearly has the size (330 lbs) and explosiveness off the line to become an NFL prospect. He must show consistency this year prove to scouts he is ready for the next level. After missing the spring due to a shoulder injury, he must work hard this summer to get back into playing shape.

Prediction: Rounds 5-6

Guys like Ron Brace, Robert Francois, Kevin Akins, Brandon Robinson and Chris Crane could all be potential late rounders, but more than likely will be signed as free agents.
