Matthias picks up big time offer
SpartanMag.com was able to watch Zac Matthias of Hemlock High School in Michigan workout at the Ohio State NIKE Camp on Friday. At that event Matthias checked in at 6-foot-5, 297-pounds and showed good feet. Matthias was one of the top performers at the event and did especially well in the one-on-one drills. On the way home Matthias received some good news we caught up with and got the details.
"On the way home I spoke with Coach Barnett from Michigan State and he said that they were offering me a scholarship, Matthias said. "I was excited, it was good to get an offer from them. I also spoke with Coach Dantonio and that went well."
The offer from the Spartans gives Matthias two Big Ten offers. The Wisconsin Badgers offered a few weeks ago on a visit to Madison. Matthias also has several MAC schoalrship offers as well.
In recent updates Matthias has made it clear that he grew up a big Michigan fan and would like to get an offer from the Wolverines. We asked him about that.
"I am not hearing from them as much. Most of the stuff I get from them is through the mail. I am going to go t camp there on June 8th. I have heard they might be looking for smaller, quick offensive lineman, so we shall see.
Matthias would seem to be a very good fit for the more power oriented offense that the Spartans employ. SpartanMag.com has seen film on Matthias and he is very effective at drive blocking and getting out to the next level. He is the type of offensive lineman you would expect teams that want to play smash mouth football to like.
Some of the offensive linemen the Spartans have on the roster were originally recruited to play in the spread. Offensive Line Coach Dan Roushar is looking for players he believes fit the current system. Coach Roushar recently stopped into Hemlock High School during the evaluation period. That visit certainly is what precipitated the scholarship offer.
Matthias indicated that he plans on hitting several camps this summer, including Michigan State's
"Coach Dantonio said he wants me to come up there for camp for a day, so I will do that for sure. I also plan on going to a few other s camps as well."
As far as the NIKE Camp, Matthias indicated that he was glad he attended the event.
"It was a good experience for me," he said. "I got a chance to compete against many of the top players in the Midwest."
The fact that the Spartans decided to offer is a strong indication that he is a player that is very high on their list. Michigan State is limited on scholarships this year and they are being very selective. They will likely on take 3 OL for the class of 2009 and already have a commitment from 4-star recruit Blake Treadwell. A player like Matthias would be an excellent addition to what is shaping up to be a great recruiting class. The Spartans already have 6 commitments and 5 of them are rated as 4-star recruits.
Spartanmag.com will be sure to follow the recruitment of Matthias s it unfolds.
