Matthias gets BIG offer

Michigan State will likely sign 3 offensive line prospects for the class for 2009 and one of the players they are looking closely at is Zac Matthias of Hemlock High School. SpartanMag.com spoke with the 6-foot-5, 292-pound prospect last night and he updated us on his recruitment.

Last week SpoartanaMag.com was informed that Matthias had picked up several offers from MAC schools. We asked him about this.

"Yes I was offered by Western a few weeks ago and then I went up to Central to see a practice. I was able to take a tour of the campus and then after that the Head Coach took me into his office and offered me."

The offer from Central Michigan gave Matthias two scholarship offers, but he did not stay at two offers for long. This past weekend he got some big recruiting news when he took another unofficial visit.

"I went out to Wisconsin to see their spring game and they offered me this weekend."

The offer by the Badgers is his first from a Big Ten school. Matthias' primary recruiter from the Wisconsin is Coach Alexander. So what were his impressions of Wisconsin?

"I liked it a lot," Matthias said. "The campus was really nice and they have a great program there."

Once word gets out that the Badgers have offered Matthias it is very likely that other school could follow suit. In addition to Wisconsin, teams like Michigan State, Michigan, Northwestern, Purdue, Notre Dame and several others Big Ten tams have been in frequent contact.

We asked Matthias about the Michigan State Spartans?

"I have been up to Michigan State. I got a chance to meet with all of the coaches. The offensive line coach to me he wants me to come there for one day of camp."

The Spartans are very particular when it comes to offensive line recruiting. Last year they did not offer any of the linemen they signed in February until they came to East Lansing and worked personally with Coach Dan Roushar.

In addition to stopping into Michigan State for a day of camp, Matthias indicated that he would be attending the NIKE Camp held at Ohio State in May. He will also stop into the University of Michigan on June 8th for a day of camp.
We asked Matthias about a timetable for his decision?

"I am not in a hurry, but I would like to make my choice before my senior year. I want to make sure I am comfortable with my decision."

It should be interesting to see what other teams offer Matthias. In previous updates Matthias has indicated that he grew up a Michigan fan and strongly favors the Wolverines.

There has been some speculation that the Wolverines will look for linemen that are a bit lighter and more agile than some of the prospects the targeted in the past. Matthias' style of play may be a better fit for a team that runs a pro-style or power offense like the Badgers or even Michigan State. Matthias is known for being an excellent drive blocker.

Coach Harlon Barnett is recruiting Matthias for the Spartans. The Michigan State staff will be hitting the recruiting trail over the coming weeks. SpartanMag.com ill be sure to follow-up with Matthias and will also be evaluating him at the NIKE Camp.
