Bonugli takes in Frogs spring game

Although San Antonio is known more as a destination for tourists, college recruiters make their way to the south Texas city a find a few gems each year. While it's not known as a prospect haven, it has turned out some good players and this year boasts one of the top players in the nation, Warren High's Calvin Howell.

While everyone firmly knows how highly regarded the defensive tackle is, few know of the skills one of his Warren teammates possesses, safety Joseph Bonugli. The hard-hitting safety was virtually all over the field in 2007 racking up 107 tackles and 6 interceptions. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown. It's no surprise that he earned several post season accolades such as his district's defensive MVP honor, first-team All-Area, and Defensive Player of the Year in southwest Texas.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder has garnered interest from several schools including TCU, LSU, UTEP, and most recently Oklahoma. Bonugli, along with several other prospects including Howell was in Ft. Worth Saturday to catch the Frogs spring game and came away impressed.

"The game was real good," he said. "It went in order and I like how the defense plays and the flow that they play at."

After the game Bonugli got to visit with the coaching staff and although he didn't get an offer he left knowing that one may be on the way.

"I got to meet Coach Glasgow and Coach Bumpas," he said. "I also went and talked with Coach Patterson in his office and he told me they want to offer but they want me to come to a one-day camp first. They said they know I can come up and defend the run but the want to see how I back pedal, they want to see me cover before they offer. I like Coach Patterson, he's a cool guy, I also like his wife, she's real chill. He was telling me that he doesn't like to do a whole lot of recruiting out Texas, that he likes to recruit the Texas kids."

So, did the Frogs make enough of an impression to make them one of Bonugli's top schools?

"Oh yeah," he said. "Most definitely."

Bonugli will be in Ft. Worth again in two weeks for the April 26th Nike Camp.
