Drew is high on in-state schools

John Drew is a defensive tackle out of Northside Columbus High School and not only does he do well on the gridiron, but he laces up the sneakers and helps the Patriots on the basketball court as well.

In a game late in January, Drew looked up and saw Georgia's Rodney Garner in the stands.

"It was exciting to see Georgia in the stands and they were the first school to come watch me play basketball," he said. "I gave my best effort, I tried to show my athleticism, and that I could move."

Coach Garner is Georgia's interior defensive line coach and Recruiting Coordinator and his visit to Northside was no surprise to Drew.

"I knew he was coming because I had called him prior to that and he asked me when our next game was. He was set to come to another one, but it was cancelled because of snow. I expected him to be there, so hopefully I showed him something."

The 6-foot-2, 290-pound defensive tackle has a good bit of interest in the Dawgs early on.

"I am real interested in Georgia right now and they are one of the top schools on my list," Drew stated.

Another in-state school traveled down to Columbus to check on this junior Patriot as well early in 2008.

"Georgia Tech came down to my school to talk to Coach [Nathan] Laney (Northside Head Coach) about me and I like them a lot too."

"They are strong in academics and that is a high priority for me. They are up there too like Georgia."

A number of other programs stopped in to see Drew and they will likely be return once the evaluation period begins in the middle of April. Other than the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets, Drew has interest in a number of other programs.
