Plenty of pre-season hype for D.J. Augustin

Texas Longhorns point guard D.J. Augustin enjoyed a terrific freshman season, ending with several individual honors. The 5-foot-11 floor general was tabbed last week as the Big 12 pre-season Player of the Year by the coaches, while the Texas Longhorns were picked to finish second in the league by those same coaches. Augustin talks about the team and the individual praise he is receiving from around the nation.

Talk about your relationship with T.J. Ford over the summer?

We did a lot of basketball stuff. Vocally, he taught me to be vocal and demand things from my teammates. I've got to bring it so they (teammates) can follow me as a leader. We just talked and did basketball stuff.

It must have helped because Coach Barnes said he isn't concerned about the leadership on this team anymore?

It helped a lot. I think all of my teammates picked it up also. We learned from Royal Ivey. A lot of guys helped us this summer and we grew as a team.

What are your thoughts on being named pre-season Big 12 player of the year?

I'm not really into the honors and that kind of stuff. What I'm really focused on is being an academic all-American, so that is what I'm focused on. As far as the team, we are trying to win a national championship.
