Grading Out

The Demon Deacons turned in another gutsy performance last Thursday, coming from behind to beat No. 21 Florida State. After giving up some big plays in the first half, Wake Forest came out in the last two quarters and dominated the game. A late touchdown pass from Riley Skinner to Kenny Moore and a 48-yard field goal from Sam Swank helped to put the Deacs over the top on Thursday night in front of a national audience.

Riley Skinner seems to be developing a knack for getting into trouble early in the game and then bailing himself out in the final minutes. Although this past Thursday night he waited until the second half to throw a pair of interceptions, he redeemed himself with 7 minutes left in the game, when he found Kenny Moore on a deep post route in the end zone. Skinner has looked a little more aggressive this season with his throwing decisions, and as a result, has turned the ball over 9 times already this season. However, Skinner is a perfect example of why statistics don't always tell the whole story. After throwing two interceptions, Skinner bounced back and led a drive starting from Wake's own 18 yard line with 10 minutes left to play in a tie game. On what turned out to be the key drive of the game, Skinner went 3-for-5 for 70 yards, including the 35-yard touchdown pass to Moore; he also rushed for 7 yards. He was able to put his mistakes behind him, and he went on to prove the validity of what he said following the Maryland game: "You've got to have a short memory."
