Ahead of schedule

It revealed itself in the blood trickling down the nose of a Penn State linebacker. Or in the desperation catch made on fourth down against Purdue. Or in the path paved to the end zone against Michigan State.

Yes, the potential of Notre Dame's freshmen has shown itself in forms other than Jimmy Clausen's right arm. The class arrived in South Bend with high expectations; it's already exceeded many of them.

"Maybe at the volume that they've played, not that they've played," Weis said when asked if he's surprised by the rookie production. "It's a very good, talented class and, they're obviously in some cases going through culture shock or growing pains, but they're helping the team get better."
