Nguon's Notebook

When the word "depth" comes up in football conversation it doesn't always refer to just the offensive or defensive side of the ball. Sometimes, having a quality two-deep depth chart is crucial as the talent spills over onto the special teams play as well.
This case clearly holds true for Cal junior walk-on kicker Jordan Kay, who Cal coach Jeff Tedford inserted for the injured incumbent starter Tom Schneider this season.

After Schneider went down moments before the Bears were set to tangle with Tennessee on the much anticipated September 1 season opener three weeks ago with a quad injury, Tedford walked up to Kay on the sideline during warm-ups and gave the junior kicker the news he'd been waiting to hear since he arrived on campus.
