Terps-WVU Notebook

Evaluating a run defense based on total yards against West Virginia is an exercise in futility.

A glance at the final statistics in Maryland's 31-14 loss to the Mountaineers reveals 355 yards rushing and a pair of back over 100 yards.

Those numbers typically mean disaster, but the Mountaineers are anything but typical.

Despite the gaudy statistics West Virginia accumulated, the Maryland defense played the Mountaineers reasonably well, though the unit wasn't without crucial breakdowns. WVU star Steve Slaton rushed for 137 yards but coach Ralph Friedgen wasn't unhappy with his team's effort.
