NU Notes: Steinkuhler backed down on Wednesday

For the second day in a row, junior defensive tackle Ty Steinkuhler was out at practice, but he did not have pads or a helmet with him.

Steinkuhler continues to nurse a sprain he suffered to his right knee in last weekend's Nevada game, and defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt said on Wednesday it's something the staff will continue to monitor closely.

"It's going to be based on Stein," Wyatt said. "Right now he's day-to-day, so we're just waiting to see how much he can do. Obviously if he can play, he'll play. If he can't, then another guy has an opportunity.

"Whenever Stein shows that he's ready, we'll know. So as of now, we'll just go as status quo."

If Steinkuhler doesn't play on Saturday, Wyatt will go with junior college transfer Kevin Dixon in his place.
