Collier to miss season

Pitt's running back depth took a hit this week when sophomore Kevin Collier fractured his right wrist during the team's scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon. But while the depth chart took a hit, head coach Dave Wannstedt said that Collier didn't exactly take a hit when he sustained the injury.

"I hate to use the word 'unusual' or 'freak play,' but we were watching today on film, and he fell on that wrist 10 times every day for the last month. Why, this time, it broke, I have no idea."

Collier appeared in 8 games last season as a true freshman, rushing 33 times for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns, as well as catching 3 passes for 18 yards. Since Collier did not redshirt last season, he will be able to use that option this year and still have three years of eligibility remaining.

In that way, Collier's situation is similar to that of senior receiver Derek Kinder, who tore his ACL in camp. Kinder also has a redshirt year left, so he'll be able to return in 2008.
