Will greyshirt Leong need another year?
No redshirt needed?
Tech signed five freshman receivers out of high school in their 2007 class. However, there was a sixth receiver in the group who has flown, for the most part, under the radar. But, if on the field performance has anything to do with it, don't expect freshman Lyle Leong to be off anyone's radar much longer.
One of the reasons Leong didn't receive much fanfare is the fact that he was a greyshirt last season, meaning he enrolled for the spring semester of last year which gave him essentially six years after high school to play four seasons of football. Leong was given the opportunity to greyshirt because it was thought, at the time, that he was too skinny and perhaps a step too slow to make an immediate impact.
But now that Leong has had a chance to show the coaches what he can do, he's showing them, and the rest of the world, that he's just too good to keep off the field.
"He came out of the shadows," said outside receivers coach Linclon Riley about Leong's sudden emergence. "He had a really good spring and really surprised some people. He came out and competed well. For a guy who was basically a true freshman, he came out and competed well here. I wasn't happy with his first day this fall but he's picked it up the next few and he's starting to get himself where I expected him to be after the spring."
