Spring Spotlight: Jonathan Owens
UGASports.com will be on the road Monday through Friday throughout the month of May. We will be visiting school after school to see some of the top prospects in the country go through spring practice. We will run the Spring Spotlight feature daily into June showing exclusive practice video, up close photos, and sharing our observations on the prospects we watched each day. The prospect featured this time is Alabama OL Jonathan Owens.
Prospect: Jonathan Owens
High School: Susan Moore (Blountsville, Al.)
Position: Offensive Line (Guard/Tackle)
Vitals: 6-5, 290-pounds
Offers: Georgia and Troy
Favorites: Georgia leads.
The Skinny in Recruiting: Owens would like to commit shortly after Coach Bryan Jennings and Susan Moore wrap up spring practice. Right now Georgia is in the driver's seat to land Owens, but other schools like Auburn, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and Mississippi State have been showing more interest lately and if they offered, then they could give the Dawgs some competition.
UGASports.com traveled to Susan Moore last Monday and we had the opportunity to see Owens in action. We saw him go through some OL drills, agility drills, inside drills, and even get a little work on the defensive line. Here is what we saw that day.
Spring Practice Observations: Owens showed good feet, good mobility, and he really loves to punish the man in front of him. Not too many, if any Susan Moore players have the size to really challenge Owens, but they probably help him a good bit. He has to be quick, stay low, and really work to get a block on the smaller players.
He did a good job keeping his pad level down for the most part, but that is something all high school OL's have to work on as they prepare for the next level. He showed good quickness off the ball, the ability to finish off the block, and he looked like a headhunter out there. He looks for someone to hit until the whistle blows.
