Spring Notebook: Backfield competition heats up

Competition is always a key theme during spring practice and nowhere is the competition more heated for the Crimson Tide than at running back. The Tide are looking to replace three-year starter Kenneth Darby and while there's a plethora of talented backs waiting to take over, no one has emerged as a clear-cut favorite.

Junior Jimmy Johns has the most experience of the bunch but off the field issues have led to limited playing time and a difficult spring for Johns. With Johns sorting through his issues, two younger backs appear to have emerged as the early favorites for the job, sophomores Glen Coffee and Terry Grant. Both players' had their seasons cut short by injury last year but appear to be on the road to full recovery.
