A New Era

Yesterday, spring media day marked the beginning of a new season. Optimism was in the air as coach Tyrone Willingham spoke of opportunity and the goal of a bowl birth. After only eight wins in three seasons some find it hard to see optimism. Others see it staring them in the face, in the form of a 6-foot-3, 215-pound red-shirt freshman quarterback with a cannon arm, quick feet and an even quicker mind.

A lot has been said since Jake Locker signed his letter of intent to play for the University of Washington. He is a local legend who had 94 touchdowns as a high school starter. His 272-yard, four-touchdown performance against Prosser in the 2005 Washington State 3A title game cemented his place in the history books and in the minds of Husky nation.

Now, after a season of imitating opposing quarterbacks on Washington's scout team, many believe Locker is ready to lead this team where all Husky fans want it. "We want to be in the top 25 and be in a BCS bowl at the end of the year. I want to be the best quarterback in the Pac-10 and lead this team where it wants to go," said Locker.
