Buffs set for the first scrum of spring ball
BOULDER, Colo. - The Buffaloes donned shoulder pads for the first time on Thursday afternoon, as they got prepared for their first scrum of spring ball.
The scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday morning at 10 am. It will take place up in Folsom Field and is open to the public.
"It will actually be more of a live practice than it will [be a scrimmage]," head coach Dan Hawkins admitted. "With our lack of linemen, we can't go out the gates and go [through] a 65-play scrimmage. Which, in the long run, might be even better; you don't end up beating each other up."
One of the more interesting position battles on the defensive side of the ball this off-season is at defensive end. The loss of Abraham Wright and Walter Boye-Doe to graduation means both starting jobs are up for grabs.
Senior-to-be Alonzo Barrett and junior Maurice Lucas are the most experienced defensive ends returning. Barrett played 144 snaps last season and Lucas played 167 snaps.
