Who will be the QB?
In 2006 Baylor knew Shawn Bell was their quarterback. Back-up Terrance Parks was moved to receiver and redshirt freshman Blake Szymanski was promoted. It was pretty cut and dry, and there really was not too much to discuss.
2007 is a different story. The Bears return Blake Szymanski and redshirt freshman Tyler Beatty from a year ago. They also brought in Kent St. transfer Michael Machen and junior college standout John David Weed. All have their eyes on the starting quarterback position.
If there is one, it's not being talked about. Blake Szymanski is thought to be the frontrunner due to his experience, but it's unlikely Michael Machen and John David Weed were brought in to ride the pine. This one appears to be wide open with Szymanski, Machen, and Weed leading the way
Szymanski had a chance to make an impression in three starts to close out the 2006 season. He was not spectacular but he had his moments, and is expected to get a shot to claim the starting spot.
He has the size and brings an added dimension of athleticism; however, his experience in the system is what may give him the edge.
Michael Machen is not your average senior. He transferred to Baylor from Kent St. and taking advantage of the Graduate transfer rule. He is older because of a stint in minor league baseball and is well traveled playing football at Alabama, Coffeyville CC, and Kent State.
He started 10 games his junior season and threw for 2,078 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was injured before the start of the 2006 season and did not play much as a result.
