2006 in review: July through October
In another installment of our "2006 in review" feature, VandySports.com looks back at key happenings in men's basketball, football and baseball last calendar year. This segment looks closely at the big events in those sports from July through October.
August 4: Vanderbilt opens fall football practice with fans wondering who will replace departed SEC player of the year Jay Cutler under center. Many eyes are on Arizona transfer Richard Kovalcheck, but it will be sophomore Chris Nickson who wins and keeps the job throughout fall.
August 16: Larry Smith, the eventual Alabama player of the year, commits to Vanderbilt. Smith's Prattville team will later defeat nationally-ranked Hoover in the state title game, as Smith continues to attract attention from top programs even after his Vandy commitment.
August 27: Whites Creek athlete Jamie Graham commits to the Vanderbilt football program. Graham, an undiscovered talent, has several basketball offers, and later goes on to win Nashville's prestigious Hume Award, given annually to one Metro Nashville football player for a combination of football talent, sportsmanship and character.
