Irish offer for Tate?

Hendersonville (Tenn.) Pope John Paul II athlete Golden Tate will be receiving something he's wanted in his mailbox for a long time. An offer from Notre Dame.

"I just got my ACT score back and I got a 26," said the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder. "That's been faxed to Notre Dame and I've been told an official offer in writing is coming. That's one of the ones I've wanted so I'm excited about that."

Tate has never been to South Bend, Ind. so he's set an official visit there for Dec. 1.

"I like Notre Dame a lot, since I began going to Catholic School I've heard so much about it and when coach Weis was hired, I became more interested," he said. "They want me as an athlete. I'm hoping wherever I can go I can be a combination wide receiver and running back and get a lot of touches, but I'm sure a lot of players say that. There are probably a lot of other guys out there like me so I'll be happy to play wherever I can to get on the field."

Tate said he also wants to visit a couple other programs before deciding.

"I want to visit Alabama for sure and maybe South Carolina as well," he said. "I have been to Vanderbilt because it's close already. I plan on seeing a couple schools as well as Notre Dame before I decide."

Is Notre Dame now the team to beat?

"It's an offer I've wanted quite a bit so I'm excited about it," he said. "But I need to see it first. If it's as nice as everyone tells me it is, then I certainly could end up there."

Tate accounted for more than 4,000 total yards as a junior. His team has been eliminated from the playoffs so his next action will be at the Offense-Defense All American Bowl in late December. The game itself is on Jan. 4 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
