Rookie QB proves himself in Scrimmage No. 1

Freshman Keith Smith came to Purdue's campus last weekend determined to prove himself as a quarterback.

The rookie from Fort Hood, Texas, was recruited as a quarterback, but he's also an outstanding athlete, but is such a fine line athlete, a move to receiver or the secondary has appeared to be very much a possibility, if not likelihood.

But, based on the first week of Purdue's training camp, it doesn't appear as if Smith will be moving anywhere any time soon.

"I think he's a better quarterback than we thought he was when we recruited him," Coach Joe Tiller said following Sunday's practice, during which his team scrimmaged for the first time.

Tiller said Smith is clearly the team's No. 3 quarterback coming out of Week 1 of camp, behind starter Curtis Painter and backup Joey Elliott.

Smith put an exclamation point on his fine first week with his showing during the scrimmage, at which he was arguably the offensive star of the entire day.
