Practice rolls on

BOULDER, Colo. - The Buffs donned shoulder pads for the first time during preseason camp on Wednesday. The newcomers and veterans have now each completed three practice sessions.

"I like where we're at," head coach Dan Hawkins said. "Of course we haven't gotten pads on yet. Anybody can play flag football but when you put on the pads it becomes a little different."

Thursday is the final day in which the newcomers and veterans are split up. Friday's practice between 4-6:30 pm will combine both groups and will also be the first full contact practice of camp.

It might be too early to form solid impressions but after watching the true freshmen closely this week, it's hard to believe Colorado's 2006 signing class ranked 48th nationally and 10th in the Big 12.

Some of the classes' more highly regarded signees - including Jason Brace, Marquez Herrod, Justin Nonu, Michael Sipili and Jimmy Smith - look like players that will have successful college careers at the Big 12 level. Even some of the less heralded recruits have impressed.

Cha'pelle Brown might stand in at just 5-foot-7, 165-pounds but the freshman cornerback features a 36-inch vertical and is almost always in great position.
