UCLA Champions made - Part I
A packed banquet room at the Manhattan Beach Marriott Hotel last Thursday evening provided a lively setting as the South Bay Bruins Alumni Association held its annual junior transfer scholarship dinner, and Silent Auction, where to everyone's delight, UCLA football coach Karl Dorrell and basketball coach Ben Howland were the featured speakers.
While the evening was deemed successful in that it netted over $18,000 in scholarship monies, the ebullient True Blue crowd, 8-clapping loudly along with Cheerleader-Emeritus Geoff ("Every-Man-Woman-And-Child") Strand, was equally enthralled with both coaches' "State of the Bruins" addresses.
Coach Dorrell spoke first, and commenced his speech by detailing the transformation of student-athletes which he witnesses in the pre-season, as manifested in either overcoming the adversity of injuries, or simply in the sweat and toil they endure in the weight room, as well as the classroom.
