Spring Football--Defense Review
Here's a recap off the defense's performance this spring as well as
a quick look at special teams. The big question on defense is who will step up
and be the leaders on this side of the ball for the Beavers this season?
It was an up-and-down spring for this unit. At times, it was dominant, collapsing the pocket and stuffing the run down after down. But it was also overwhelmed by the offensive line more than once. So this unit has the potential to be much improved this season and take pressure off the secondary.
Jeff Van Orsow was the star of this unit at defensive end. He capped off his stellar spring with three sacks in the spring game. He appears primed for a breakout season. The only other defensive end who looked impressive was Joe Rudulph, who ran with the second team defensive most of the spring. He has put on a quite a bit of weight and is close to 260 pounds now. And he's still fast and explosive. It wouldn't be surprising to see him move up the depth chart in the fall. He's got all the talent in the world. The only concern is can he can learn to keep his temper and emotions in check. He was kicked out of practice once this spring.
