A look ahead: Gateway's Shayne Hale
Gateway linebacker Shayne Hale is hearing interest from recruiters. He's getting letters from Pitt, Penn State, and Notre Dame, among others, and it appears that most major programs will be interested in Hale before his time as a Gator is through. He hasn't received any official scholarship offers, yet, but there's a good reason for that: NCAA rules say colleges can't officially offer a player until September of his junior year in high school.
At 6-4½, 220 pounds, Hale is currently finishing up his sophomore year. But the college coaches who have watched Gateway film season already know his name very well.
In the 2006 season, Hale figures to take over at middle linebacker, the spot vacated by incoming Pitt freshman Dan Loheyde and play some fullback for Gateway.
He said that most colleges are talking to him about playing linebacker, but a sophomore of his size can only expect to keep growing (he said that he thinks he has grown several inches since the end of the 2005 season). As that happens, his projected position could vary.
