AUBURN | Rising senior Trovon Reed is changing positions.
The former wideout met with coach Gus Malzahn on Thursday afternoon and is planning to spend his final college season at field cornerback. The Tigers' current starter there, Chris Davis, is graduating this spring.
Reed was a four-star recruit in 2010, though Rivals.com assessed him as an athlete. He played quarterback at Thibodaux High in Louisiana and worked at cornerback as well. Reed played wideout and cornerback in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
He spent the first three seasons of his Auburn career at wideout, though he never emerged as a front-line option. Reed caught nine passes for 98 yards this season and has 384 career yards.
Reed's move to defense adds critical depth to a position without much. Auburn stuck with a three-man rotation at cornerback this season, which included Davis, senior Ryan White and junior Jonathon Mincy.
