In depth: Eric Lauderdale
In May JCFootball.com rated Eric Lauderdale the No. 1 Juco receiver in the country after he caught 60 passes for 916 yards and 7 touchdowns as a freshman. A 6-2, 200-lb. burner with 4.45 speed in the 40, from Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo, California, the school that brought the Ducks Kyle Long, Lauderdale could fill the big receiver role filled so admirably this year by Daryle Hawkins and in past seasons by Lavasier Tuinei, Jaison Williams, James Finley and Garren Strong.
It helps to have at least one bigger guy in the receiver rotation, a target for third down, at the goal line, and moving the chains, but recruiting community college receivers is tricky. Finley was the last JC receiver to come in and have an immediate impact for the Ducks. Rahsaan Vaughn showed some talent in practice, even caught on briefly with the New York Jets, but never materialized as a threat for the Webfoots, just 21 catches in two seasons, for 259 yards and two tds, despite being a 1,000-yard guy at College of San Mateo.
