Recruiting in the trenches

There's always a premium on big, quick, strong football players.

Every year, every season, every signing day, 125 FBS schools compete for 90-odd top caliber defensive tackle prospects, roughly a hundred if you throw in the 10 best JC guys.

Some schools compete better than others. Some kids are out of reach due to grades, geography, or proximity to the girl back home.

In the end, a Top Ten school like Oregon from the rainy Pacific Northwest is competing with 11 other PAC-12 schools for perhaps a dozen guys from the Western United States. In an average year there are rarely more than five 4 and 5-star potential Nick Fairleys that will even take a phone call for a potential trip to Autzen Stadium.
