With a little more than two months before he arrives on campus, three-start Florida State signee John Franklin is a busy man.

The dual-threat quarterback from South Planation high is a key member to South Plantation's track & field team.

In Thursday night's 4A District 11 meet, Franklin advanced to Regionals in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash and his 4X100 relay team posted the top time as he and Arkansas signee Alex Collins led the way. South Plantation finished second in the meet and will advance to Regionals starting on Wednesday.

"I do it just to stay in shape," Franklin said. "Last year after running track I felt a lot more in shape coming into spring practice for high school. I think it helped me out a lot with my speed and just to something so I won't be just not doing anything being lazy. I want to get a chance to win another state title."

In addition to running track, Franklin and Collins have been working out with former Temple and Denver Broncos wide receiver Travis Shelton at least twice a week.

Because of his speed, it is likely that Franklin will play wide receiver in college instead of QB. But for now the 6-foot-1, 171-pounder is working as if he's going to stay at QB. He works with Shelton on his mechanics and throws routes for Collins and the other players they work out with.

"I've been going out at least twice a week throwing routes," he said. "I've been pretty much balancing (workouts and track), making sure I stay with my mechanics and stuff."

Franklin admitted he was surprised to hear about the news of Clint Trickett's decision to transfer. He thinks that Trickett's move, and the fact that Jimbo Fisher gave him his word, will allow him to stay in the QB meeting room in the fall.

"Coach Fisher told me he'd definitely give me a shot to play quarterback," Franklin said. "He recruited me as a quarterback and I think I'll have that chance now that (Trickett's transfer) opens up a lot of things."
