'O' bounces back

AUBURN | The offense finally shined a bit inside Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday.

It's been a long time coming.

Tailback Corey Grant scored on a long touchdown run and gashed the Tigers' defense a few more times with grueling work between the tackles. Quarterbacks Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace were able to get the ball downfield more than they had during the first spring scrimmage last week.

In wideout Sammie Coates' eyes, that's significant progress.

"We started scoring points, making big plays like we're supposed to," he said. "We started to start looking like a really good offense. We're going to be real good. The pace is coming along. Everything's coming along as a team."

The scrimmage included 86 plays, which coach Gus Malzahn said was split evenly between runs and passes. His highlight of the day? It was Grant, whose acceleration into and beyond the hole gave the offense reason to smile Saturday.

Though Malzahn's offense attracts attention for its passing statistics, the ground game is a much more important to the head coach.

"(Grant) had some success, which was good to see," Malzahn said. "He's a hard worker. He does a lot of dirty work. He's got the potential to fit into our offense."
