Change of plans for Atkins, Floyd

It has been a long road for the Hargrave Military (Chatham, Va.) duo of defensive lineman John Atkins and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd.

The two signed with Georgia last February, but narrowly missed qualifying academically before moving on to Hargrave to meet the necessary requirements to become UGA student athletes.

Atkins told UGASports recently that both he and Floyd had received clearance from the administration to leave Hargrave early, since the it's semester overlaps with UGA's, and both were set to enroll at UGA in May, but according to the four-star prospect, that is no longer the case.

"We will not be able to enroll until May," said Atkins in a text message to UGASports on Wednesday morning. "We will not be able to enroll until then."

According to Atkins, he and Floyd were able to complete all of the necessary requirements and received the go-ahead from the administration to leave Hargrave before the end of the semester, but the proper paperwork was not filed to the NCAA from Hargrave in time for the two to enroll in January.

"Coach (Troy) Davis came and pulled me out of class before the break and told me that we wouldn't be able to enroll early," said Atkins in a phone interview with UGASports later on Wednesday. "He told us that the paper work that had to be filed to the NCAA before we could actually enroll early had not been done. He said that he stayed on them to get it in, but they didn't get it in and we won't be able to get to Georgia until May now."

Instead of enrolling at UGA in January and taking part in spring practice with the team, Atkins will now be forced to alter his plans, but the Thomson native has a plan going forward.

"Well I'm going to come back to Hargrave and complete my last two weeks here. That is all we have to do, really. I have all A's," he said. "Then coach said we could get a job, work out, and stay in shape and enroll at Georgia as soon as the semester ends there and take classes in May."

Atkins has already been in touch with the Georgia coaching staff, and says that his future coaches have been nothing but supportive.

"I talked with Coach O (Kirk Olivadotti) and he was OK with it and knows it was something that Hargrave messed up ," said Adams. "He said that we went up there and took care of business and that he was proud of us and loved us and all.

Now that he and his current and future teammate are set to enroll in May, Atkins has a couple of goals before arriving in Athens.

"First I just can't wait to sign," said Atkins. "Then I just want to get ready. I want to make sure I am ready for it all when I get there."

NOTE: Since Atkins and Floyd are no longer able to enroll early and be backed counted by taking their scholarships from the 2012 class, it now appears that Georgia will only be able to take 33 players for the current class. Stay tuned to UGASports for updates on that and the rest of UGA recruiting information.
