Top storylines five days in

Oklahoma State is just five days in to fall camp, but that's enough to get a handle on a few storylines. Here are a few that stand out thus far:

Top position battle: The competition between Lavocheya Cooper and Shamiel Gary was really the only starter's job up for grabs entering fall camp. So, there's no major surprise here. Cooper left spring ball as the starter, but Gary has made an early push to take over the spot that Markelle Martin held down for three seasons.

Gary has already secured a spot as the third safety in alignments that utilize that scenario, but safeties coach Van Malone says the junior transfer from Wyoming is not satisfied with just having that role. That's music to the coach's ears. Look for a more in-depth story on the strong safety position coming soon on OSI.

Other position battles to watch:

  • Offensive tackle: Mike Bowie's departure created a contest for one of the tackle spots. Parker Graham will anchor one (currently left). Dan Koenig (right) and Devin Davis (left) are trying to prove they belong as a starter.
  • Wide receiver: The starter spots appear pretty set, but a number of freshmen are trying to show they belong in the rotation.
  • Defensive end: Cooper Bassett and Nigel Nicholas are listed as either/or starters. Frankly, that's accurate. They'll rotate, though one may earn a few extra snaps per game with a strong fall camp.

Top sleeper: For this one, we're thinking of it as "the guy most fans have never heard of, but might have an impact in 2012." Meet John Goodlett, the Owasso native that transferred in to OSU from Indiana State in 2011. After a redshirt season, Goodlett stepped up for the depleted Cowboy wide receiver corps in the spring and had a good showing. The walk-on has kept it up early in fall camp and very well could be a contributor from an inside receiver spot.

Others to watch: They won't appear in the next section just yet, but a pair of true freshmen could work their way into important roles.
