The Liberty Bowl in a nutshell

Vanderbilt ended its season with a disappointing 31-24 loss to Cincinnati in the Liberty Bowl. VandySports.com's Chris Lee and Jesse Johnson weigh in with all the highs, lows, and notable moments.


Turning point:
VU had just taken a 21-17 lead with 14:03 left in the game when backup quarterback Larry Smith hit Chris Boyd with a 68-yard touchdown pass on a bubble screen, and 12 seconds later, Cincinnati's Ralph David Abernathy ran the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown.

That proved to be a back-breaker for the Commodores, who'd struggled to do much offensively and had finally gotten some much-needed momentum. When VU got the ball back, the next two drives were a pair of 3-and-outs followed by a Smith interception.
