JUCO lineman taking UA official

In the Alabama Crimson Tide's search for immediate help along the defensive front in the 2011 recruiting class, Nick Saban and the Tide staff have set their sites on several elite junior college prospects, including Raymond (MS) Hinds C.C. defensive end Leon Mackey. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound four-star pass rusher has been among the most highly recruited junior college linemen of the 2011 class and has narrowed down his choices to a final five.

"So far I've taken visits to South Carolina and Texas Tech. Both went pretty well and I had a good time," Mackey said. "I mostly talked to them about playing time and met with my position and strength and conditioning coaches at their schools. That's going to be really important for me. Both said I could come in and play early but I know I have to go in and earn it. I'm good with that."

"This weekend I'm going to Alabama for an official. I'm looking forward to that one. I also have Mississippi State down for an official and maybe Tennessee. Those are my top five."

So far the Crimson Tide have made a strong impression with Mackey, both with their on-field efforts and the relationship developed between the coaching staff and Mackey.

"Alabama is a good program. I like the way they play defense. When I talked to Coach Saban he told me that they don't recruit many junior college players and they ones they do recruit they expect to him come in and play. Bo Davis and I get along well. I like him because he's coaching my position already and he's a good person. I've talked to him a few times and he's a down to earth guy. This weekend I'm going to get to know him better."

Mackey plans to make his final decision in late January and enroll at his chosen school next May.
