UTEP in the way of Tulsa's title hopes
Many college football fans lament the fact their sport doesn't have a playoff. Well, for Tulsa, the last two weeks of the season are as close as the game gets.
On Saturday, the Golden Hurricane, winners of four straight, play host to UTEP. It's not an especially enticing game on the schedule, but Tulsa has to win it in order to stay in the hunt for a Conference USA championship.
"We've been in a situation where it's a single-elimination tournament," Tulsa senior Charles Clay explained. "We have to win out. One loss will doom our chances to achieve our goal."
Dealing with that pressure shouldn't be a problem for a Tulsa team that has rolled since losing at SMU on Oct. 9. The Golden Hurricane got big wins at Notre Dame and Houston in recent weeks.
Still, that pressure only will increase.
"The Conference USA championship is on the line, and the biggest game of the year is this week," Golden Hurricane coach Todd Graham said.
