Gameday Preview: Tulsa at SMU

Who would have thought it? A couple of 3-2 teams meeting this week. SMU has lost to Texas Tech and TCU, and is currently last in the SCSL (Southwest Conference Survivor's League). Tulsa has lost to East Carolina and Oklahoma State and is looking forward to souvenirs from South Bend, Indiana including touchdown Jesus replicas. The Ponies two losses are by a combined score of 70-48. Tulsa's two downers are by a combined 116-77.

No need to remind Tulsa fans that the sixth game of the season in 2009 was the day the wheels started to come off. At that point, things sat a 4-1. Then came the 28-21 loss to Boise State. At the time, that could have been considered a moral victory given the Broncos lofty ranking and national stature.

Head Coach Todd Graham was upbeat after that game.

"This one hurt because we wanted this one pretty bad," he said of playing the Broncos. "If anything, we weren't outplayed, we were outcoached. It was a pretty good chess match. We made adjustments and they made adjustments. I thought our boys played great and they battled hard against a great team."

From that time on, memory lane was not a friend to the Golden Hurricane in 2009, including the game against SMU at Chapman Stadium. The Mustangs ran off twenty straight points in the second half for a 27-13 win.
