Cartwright cleared for Iowa landing

The academic hurdles have finally officially been cleared by Bryce Cartwright and the junior college point guard will be making his way to Iowa City on Wednesday to officially join the University of Iowa basketball program for the 2010-11 season.

The California native spent last season at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas and had a two classes that he needed to complete on-line this summer before he could officially be considered a Hawkeye. He recently completed his second course which clears the way for his Iowa arrival.

"There is a sense of relief to get the classes done. I knew what I had to do and I passed the classes," Cartwright said. "I'm anxious to get back to Iowa City. I haven't been there in a couple of months and I'll be back there on Wednesday night."

The 6-foot and 170 point guard says he has kept in touch with teammates Jarryd Cole and Matt Gatens this summer and looks forward to getting to know the rest of his teammates once he arrives.

"I have been keeping in touch with Jarryd and Matt. I haven't really talked to anyone else, but I am sure that I will get to know them once I get there."

He has also talked on a regular basis with the Iowa coaching staff, who have offered words of support and motivation with his on and off the court activities.

"The coaches have been in touch quite a bit encouraging me with my class work and also telling me to keep working hard in the gym and come in prepared to compete," he said.

While back home in California, Cartwright has been hitting the gym in his free time working to improve two aspects of his game to prepare for Big Ten basketball this winter.

"I have been working on my outside shooting and my defense. I feel like I have made some progress in both areas. I've always felt like I am a good defender, but you can always get better."
