Heath talks Spartan commitment
Yesterday the SpartanMag.com some good news when 6-foot-6, 245-pound defensive end prospect Joel Heath of Mount Healthy High School committed to Michigan State. Spartanmag.com was able to catch up with Heath and got some information about his decision to join the Green and White.
Heath selected Michigan State over scholarship offers from Minnesota, North Carolina State, Kansas and a host of MAC programs. SpartanMag.com asked him what it was about Michigan State that made it the place for him.
"The Michigan State coaches were great and they showed a lot of interest in me," Heath stated. "When I went up to visit it was just a great place to be and I felt at home."
Heath also stated that the contact and rapport he had with the Spartan staff was an important factor in making his decision.
"Coach Barnett stayed in contact with me for a long time and Coach Gill would e-mail me often too. When I called and told them about my decision Coach Barnett sent all the defensive coaches a text saying I just committed to Michigan State. All of the coaches e-mailed me saying they were fired up about it and welcome to the family. I am happy to be in green next year. GO GREEN!"
The book on Heath is that he is a very raw prospect, but he has as much upside as anyone in the state at the defensive end position. In addition to focusing on football, Heath has also been taking his school work very serious. He finished his junior year with a 3.3 GPA.
Heath will be back in East Lansing later this month to attend the Spartan Camp and work personally with his position Coach, Ted Gill. He will also be getting to know his future defensive teammates like Lawrence Thomas and Taiwan Jones.
Spartanmag.com will be sure to have more on Heath after he attends the Spartan Camp. Landing a high-quality player for the Cincinnati area is also a positive. The Spartans are still actively involved with several other Queen City prospect and having Heath on board certainly cannot hurl their chances with them.
