Hokies offer top TE

Virginia Tech is one of the latest teams to pull the trigger on a top tight end in the country. What does the 6-foot-6, 230-pounder think of the offer from Frank Beamer and the Hokies?

"I've dialed up about 25 offers now," Westerville (Ohio) Westerville Central tight end Nick Vannett said. "Kansas is the latest offer. They offered a couple days ago.

"I'm getting about a couple offers a week, but it's starting to die down now."

This past weekend, the tight end headed over to Ohio State for a visit.

"I went to Ohio State's scrimmage last Saturday and I was impressed to see how they featured the tight end," he said. "I liked how it became a huge factor in their passing game. I also got to meet some other recruits down there and they were all genuine guys. Overall it was impressive."

Ohio State is clearly impressing, but other schools have as well.

"I am also interested in Wisconsin, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh," he stated. "Those schools tend to produce excellent tight ends and they use them in various ways.

"All of those I've listed now are really the schools that stand out at this stage, but I've just begun the elimination process. I haven't reached a point to narrow my list, but hopefully I'll have a top five by the middle of summer."

So, it appears Virginia Tech has made the first cut. What does he like about the Hokies?

"I'm pretty fresh on Virginia Tech. I'm getting recruited by Coach Sherman," he said. "They are a top notch program with great success. I personally looked at their tight end situation, depth chart wise and noticed that it could be a great opportunity to see playing time early on. I'll be taking a trip there during the summer.

Meanwhile, this weekend Vannett will be headed on another trip.

"I'm deciding between Ohio State and Notre Dame's spring game, but other than that I have no other visits coming up in the near future."

Vannett registered 20 receptions for 240-yards and two scores as a junior. He also earned first team all-conference as a basketball player this past season.
